How CLIL and SAMR Complement Each Other
So, now that we have learned a little bit about both the CLIL methodology and the SAMR model, how can we as teachers utilize both in our lessons?
CLIL tells us what to teach.
SAMR helps us think of how we teach it.
When combined, they create a powerful structure for meaningful
learning.
CLIL focuses on teaching content through a foreign language. It focuses on content, communication, culture
and cognition. A key element is
scaffolding. A student’s confidence is
key to their success in building critical thinking. With SAMR, teachers don’t just add technology
for its own sake. They scaffold or integrate
technology strategically and in stages to build students cognition. So why not integrate the model and the
methodology?
In our next post, we will take a look at a presentation I
did for teaching The Russian Revolution with the SAMR model. Now, let’s take it one step further and make
it a history lesson for Bachillerato students in Spain in English.
Instead of a handout on Nicholas II, an online article is
substituted. Instead of an article, a
video on YouTube augments. Instead of a
written report, four groups are each given a series of four photos relevant to the
topic. Each group member takes a picture
and reports on it. The group then reviews
reports , sees how their reports are linked to fill in the gaps and combine
their new expertise. This modification
step in SAMR reinforces CLIL’s emphasis on communication and collaborative
thinking. Finally, instead of a test,
students analyze AI generated “what if” scenarios and defend their conclusions
in English.
Check out my presentation in the next blog post and please
let me know what you think.
